Conference Announcements

NoSLiP 2018

3rd Norwegian Graduate Student Conference in Linguistics and Philology

Thu, 15 Feb 2018 – Fri, 16 Feb 2018

The conference is an important meeting place for graduate students in Norway, but it is also an arena for getting to know peers from other countries and their work. In addition to the student presentations, there will be four plenary talks from leading experts in different linguistic subfields, both theoretical and applied.

Presentation (General Session):

Each presentation will have 20 minutes allotted, this includes time for questions. Due to the amount of presentations time will have to be kept. There is presentation equipment available. Please arrange your own handouts if you wish to use them. We encourage you to make them available online so that they may be accessed from computers/smartphones to reduce environmental impact.

 Poster session:

In the poster session there will be room to put up a poster demonstrating your research. The recommended size is A1, and the poster should not exceed A0. It is also recommended that a handout is made easily available online for participants. During the poster sessions presenters are expected to have a brief and concise (ca. 5 min) presentation of their research for interested participants.

 Event dinner:

Thursday evening there will be a dinner at Bar Tjuvholmen, this dinner is free for all registered attendants.

Call for Papers

The 3rd Norwegian Graduate Student Conference in Linguistics and Philology (NoSLiP 2018) will take place at the University of Oslo from 15-16th of February 2018. The conference is open to PhD students who have not completed their degree, as well as advanced MA students.

You are cordially invited to send your contributions for oral or poster presentations by September 1st, 2017 (23.59, GMT +1). We welcome submissions from all areas of linguistics and philology, including, but not limited to, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, neurolinguistics, semantics, syntax, phonology, rhetoric, and pragmatics. We hope that the conference will reflect the great variety of graduate research within language studies. Oral presentations should not exceed 20 minutes in length.

Guidelines for abstracts:

  • 1 page, including references
  • Arial, 10-point font size, 2.5 x 2.5 cm margins
  • Language: English
  • Saved as PDF format, with any phonetic fonts or images embedded
  • The PDF file must NOT contain information about the authors and their affiliations

All abstract submissions must be made electronically through the EasyAbs service.

LingPhil affiliates can apply for travel grants to cover hotel and travel expenses. For non-affiliated PhD and MA students (also from outside Norway) who would like to participate in the conference, LingPhil will award a limited number of Conference Scholarships, based on the quality of the submitted abstracts.

Notification of acceptance: October 15th.

Update: All the Conference Scholarships have now been awarded and the recipients have been contacted.

The plenary speakers are:

  • Martin Haspelmath (University of Leipzig)
  • Loraine Obler (City University of New York)
  • Terje Lohndal (Norwegian University of Science and Technology; UiT The Arctic University of Norway)
  • Aditi Lahiri (University of Oxford)

NoSLiP 2018 welcomes to all graduate students (MA and PhD) in linguistics and philology, with the only criteria that the participant has not defended a PhD by the time of the conference. The conference is open for students from both Norway and abroad.

We also invite graduate students who are not presenting to take part in the conference, because it will be a great opportunity for networking and researcher training.

MA students are strongly encouraged to submit abstracts. LingPhil will award a limited number of Conference Scholarships to MAs who wish to present at the conference.
